Join for an intimate evening of bilingual conversation and poetry with Mexican fronteriza writer Dolores Dorantes. This event is presented by CALA Alliance in partnership with the ASU Marshall Chair Borderlands Poetry Series and Palabras Bilingual Bookstore.

DOLORES DORANTES is a Mexican poet, journalist, and writer living under political asylum in El Paso, Texas. She has published nine books of poetry and prose, most recently The River/El Río (2018), a collaboration with the photographer Zoe Leonard; Style/Estilo (2015 a book of prose poems that transforms the acts and language of violence into unexpected imagesand, Intervenir/Intervene (2015), a collaboration with Mexico City poet Rodrigo Flores Sánchez. Her work has been translated into English, French, Dutch, German, Portuguese, Slovenian, Bengali, and Swedish. Dorantes is a priest in the Mahajrya Buddhist tradition. She is also a performer and bookseller working out of her mobile bookstore Librería Feminista, and the organization Cielo Portátil (for a free education).

#ArtLitPhx: Last Chance Slam

10 poets in Phoenix will be competing for the Last Chance Slot in the Phoenix Poetry Slam Finals that will be held on June 14! The slam will be hosted by Megaphone PHX (4700 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, Arizona 85012) partnered with Lawn Gnome Publishing, and begins at 8 pm.

The Phoenix Poetry Slam Team Championship will be June 14 at Megaphone PHX!

Today’s Phoenix Poetry Slam from Lawn Gnome Publishing is the result of years of seeking talented new voices and promoting strong literary events.

Lawn Gnome Publishing is an independent bookstore and publisher based out of Phoenix, AZ. “Our knowledge of poetry, independent zines and DIY bookmaking is what sets us apart from other ho-hum booksellers.”

 

#ArtLitPhx: Sparky Slam Poetry Competition

ASU is hosting their inaugural Sparky Slam poetry event emceed by the spoken word poet Tomas Stanton of Phonetic Spit. Sparky Slam is a valley wide poetry contest for students in grades 5 through 12, with a writing workshop that is taking place immediately before the competition. The purpose of the Sparky Slam is to welcome young people onto a college campus, to celebrate youth voices, and to provide young artists with writing support from ASU faculty and students.

Poets will perform an original poem, a maximum of 3 ½ minutes in length and there will be at least 20 performers.

Sparky Slam will be held at ASU’s West campus Herberger Young Scholars Academy Black Box Theatre on Saturday, February 3rd. Poets check-in is at 4:45 p.m. and the Slam begins at 6 p.m. Arrive early as seating will be limited.
