Roosevelt Row will be having First Friday ARTS Market on the first friday of every month from 6:00-10:00 pm

Roosevelt Row Arts District is a walkable, creative district in the urban core of downtown Phoenix that is nationally known for its arts and cultural events, award-winning restaurants, galleries, boutiques and live music. RoRo is fostering an urban renewal with rehabilitated bungalows and new infill projects. The Arts District connects downtown Phoenix to historic neighborhoods including Garfield, Evans Churchill, F.Q. Story, Willow, Roosevelt, Historic Roosevelt and Grand Avenue.

The Artists’ District connects downtown Phoenix to historic neighborhoods including Garfield, Evans Churchill, F.Q. Story, Willo, Roosevelt, Historic Roosevelt and Grand Avenue. Roosevelt Row begins at 7th Avenue and extends east to 16th Street. On the north side it begins at Interstate 10 and extends south to Fillmore Street.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Roosevelt Row has been a vital mixed use area from the earliest days of the establishment of Phoenix. Many of the concrete sidewalks in the neighborhood were poured in 1909, three years before Arizona officially became the 48th State. In the early 1940s, when there were approximately 30,000 people living in Phoenix, numerous businesses were established along Roosevelt Street. The flower shop at Fifth Street and Roosevelt has been in continuous operation since 1948.

In the 1970s, parts of the area were re-zoned as a high-rise incentive district leading to land speculation and a decline of the neighborhood that lasted until the late 1990s.

The blighted area was attractive to artists because the boarded-up buildings and former crack houses were affordable for studio and gallery space. The arts were a major factor in the revitalization of the area and crime rates plummeted as more people began to venture into the area to experience the cultural vibrancy.

The corridor is re-emerging as one of the most dynamic areas in downtown phoenix and a valued cultural resource in the metropolitan region and the state.

#ArtLitPhx: JAZZ meets POETRY: Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron

This month’s JAZZ meets POETRY event is a Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron, and will be held at The Nash (110 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, Arizona 85004) on April 26 from 7:00-10:00 pm.

JAZZ meets POETRY is a new series at The Nash for 2017-2018 that places poets and jazz musicians center stage to make art that is expressive, interactive and captivating.

Part theatre part concert, this performance tributes Gil Scott-Heron — considered to be “one of the most important progenitors of rap music” (AllMusic’s John Bush) — with original poetry, spoken word and musical accompaniment provided by The Nash Music by The Geibral Elisha Movement.

SPECIAL GUEST: Brooklyn, NY-based artist Tai Allen, who released a book and soundtrack project — No Jewels — in 2017. In 2010, his album “Easy Readin’” was awarded Album of the Year by the National Poetry Awards. He is a member of the National Black Writers Conference Steering Committee and has also served as the Conference’s Poetry Cafe host. Allen also is creative director for Arts+Crafts, where he curates an annual Tap+Cork Brooklyn Beer & Wine Fest, and creates performance opportunities for emerging artists, djs and poets.

#ArtLitPhx: Artist Talk: Globoscope Artists Collectif Coin

Globoscope is an immersive work made up of 200-250 luminous spheres. Collectif Coin uses light design to activate a digitized map of the space. Configured in harmony with the characteristics of the Scottsdale Waterfront, each individual sphere in this landscape is merged into an ensemble of light movements that swirl throughout the space. Mathematics and light are used to represent, transform, and expand the space, offering visitors a surrealistic stroll.

Collectif Coin, creators of “Globoscope”, is an experiential light art installation and design lab based out of Grenoble, France. Their work has occupied monumental public spaces as well as more intimate locations, each equally as immersive of an experience. Committed to the production of trans-disciplinary work with particular focus on the digital arts, Collectif Coin works around the notions of body, sound and light. Their work has been shown all over France, Italy, Berlin, Romania and Canada.

The Artist Talk will be held at the Casablanca Rooftop Lounge (7134 E Stetson Dr, Ste 300, Scottsdale, Arizona 8525) on Friday, February 23 at 7pm.

 

#ArtLitPhx: “The TIEKEN Zone – No Rules Apply!” Exhibition at Royse Contemporary

Royse Contemporary is excited to announce the solo exhibition of artist Fred Tieken entitled The TIEKEN Zone – No Rules Apply! This exhibition will feature a comprehensive selection of his latest paintings that showcase the artist’s eye for composition, diverse subject matter and poignant commentary, states curator Nicole Royse. Fresh off his exhibition at LA Art Show with bG Gallery, this marks Tieken’s first exhibition in Arizona in over a year. Tieken recently opened Tieken Gallery LA, a vibrant, contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles, CA this past fall.

Tieken’s artwork is expressionistic and painterly in style, highlighting personal subjects and experiences through irony and wit. The artist’s love of color, bold lines, and mixed media are seamlessly blended with his wry social observations and smart symbolism. Tieken’s art allows the viewer a brief glimpse into his colorful and dazzling world where one senses a pure excitement and passion for life, art, and music. “Painting is like baring my soul to the world,” states Tieken whose level of emotional commitment is beautifully and vividly demonstrated in his work.

The opening reception will take place Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 5-10 pm but the exhibit will be on display through Monday, February 26. Royse Contemporary is located in the Marshall Square complex at 7077 E. Main Street, Suite 6, Scottsdale, AZ 85251.

The opening will coincide with the weekly Thursday night Scottsdale ArtWalk in Old Town Scottsdale. The evening will feature an opportunity to meet the artist, light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.The TIEKEN Zone – No Rules Apply! will be on view through Monday, February 26, 2018.

Your Secret is Safe With MeToday we are excited to share that past contributor Christopher Jagmin’s participatory art installation called Your Secret is Safe With Me will be presented this Thursday, October 19 at Tilt Gallery in Scottsdale from 7 to 9 pm. The installation invites community members to share a secret with a complete stranger in hopes of making it easier for them to process and share their own memories in a safe place.

Sound of ColorRoyse Contemporary is so excited to present “The Sound of Color” by mixed-media artist Rafael Navarro, opening on Thursday, October 19. The exhibit will showcase art inspired by music (and musical instruments themselves) in a variety of mediums including painting, mixed-media, and sculpture.

Navarro shares, “I prefer to communicate visually, in a poetic manner, making similarities in the creation of life, music, and art.” Nicole Royse also reveals, “what I love most about Navarro’s work is his keen eye for details, the strong imagery he depicts and the stories each piece tells.”

Buck Hutchison BowersRoyse Contemporary is so excited to present the joint exhibition of Arizona artists Alexandra Bowers and Cherie Buck-Hutchison, opening on Thursday, October 5. The exhibit will showcase Bowers’ intricate wood burnings of Sonoran desert flora and fauna and Buck-Hutchison’s digitally composited photography reflecting upon the southwest landscape.

Royse ContemporaryNicole Royse’s debut show at Royse Contemporary opens Thursday, September 14. It is titled “Southwest Contemporary Today” and features art from Angel Cabrales, Charmagne Coe, Monica Aissa Martinez, Daniel Shepherd, Marilyn Szabo, and Fred Tieken. Royse notes that she “selected artists based on their distinctive voice, accomplished work, connection and history with the American Southwest, as well as their commitment and impact in the arts.”

#ArtLitPhx: Chocolate and Art Show Phoenix 2017

Chocolate and Art ShowChocolate and Art Show Phoenix is seeking both attendees and artists! Chocolate and Art Show is one of the biggest underground art shows in Phoenix. It boasts over 1,500 attendees per show. As they say, “There is something for everybody, including live body painting, live music, face-painting, and free chocolate!”

The show will take place on Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15. It will go from 8pm until 2am both nights. It will take place at The Monorchid Gallery (214 E Roosevelt Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004). You must be 21+ to attend. Tickets can be bought via Eventbrite, ranging from $5 to $15 depending on time of purchase. They can also be bought at the door for $20.

Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing

The Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at ASU is proud to offer creative writing classes through the Piper Writers Studio. Classes are taught by acclaimed and award-winning writers from the community, and they cover topics such as memoir writing, the relationship between art and writing, contemporary poetry, the relationship between politics and poetry, the reveal of information, inspiration, writer’s block, intimacy, flash fiction, and fairy tales.

The classes and workshops offered in Fall 2017 are the following:

Classes are open to individuals of all backgrounds, skill levels, and experiences, and are designed to fit around the schedules of working adults (taking place weekday evenings or weekend afternoons). Most classes are held at the Piper Writers House, the historic President’s Cottage on the ASU Tempe Campus. 
Class sizes range between 8 and 12 students in order to ensure an intimate, individualized educational experience, and fees range from $50 to  $250 (with discounts for students and individuals who are members of the Piper Circle of Friends). Classes can also qualify for professional development credit with the Arizona Department of Education. Individuals can register for classes through the Piper Center’s website, where they can also find more information about the courses.
